White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said this morning that President Bush will not endorse Connecticut U.S. Senate candidate Alan Schlesinger (R) over Sen. Joe Lieberman even though he's the Republican nominee.
And this after Schlesinger was pretty much the only Republican in Connecticut not desperately trying to distance himself from Bush:
I am one Republican who does not run away from the president," said Schlesinger, adding that he would welcome a chance to campaign in Connecticut with Bush.
All this for Joe Lieberman? Or is all this just to create as much discord in the Democratic ranks as possible?

The other shoe hasn't dropped yet; and Bush knows it.
I just can't imagine what Schlesinger is doing staying in the race. I mean, at this point, he must know he won't win. Does he think that this will still help his name recognition for some other office he could be appointed to? Does he just want to be on TV? Is he delusional enough to think that things will come around, the polls are wrong, and so on?
I mean seriously, what in the world is he thinking? Is there anyone in the state who thinks he has a chance?
Come on....even if the plan is to create discord, i don't see ho wit works or benefits the GOP.
The real reason is: Alan Schlesinger is a world-class boob-job and doesn't have a snowball's chance in winning. He does, however, figure mightily into a Lamont victory and the prospect of a Senator Lamont at 8:01pm on Nov. 7th is enough to scare anyone straight.
Don't be surprised if Lamont NEVER badmouths Schlesinger, and even says some things that paint him as a good, viable, moderate Republican candidate. If Schlesinger gets more than 15%, we're looking at Sen. Ned Lamont.
Alan is just waiting for the big pay-off to get him out of the race, and even though I support Joe, I hope it never comes.
Dick Foley--political GENIUS!
he won't be satisfied until he's bilked every penny out of Schlesinger and sized him up for his old cell at Danbury Minimum Security.
Sad to say, but Schlesinger has gone from Repubs feeling ambivalent about him to outright despising him in record speed, one might even say "ludicrous speed"...aka, he's gone plaid.
It might be beneficial to check the Transcript of the White House Briefing to clarify what Tony Snow actually said.
DR--who said Repubs woudl even putup another candidate in AS's absence?
I did not post this:

I need more trouble out of Foley like a hole in the head and a few members and employees of CT GOP ST CENTRAL have already figured out who I am.
ACR---you may not have posted it, but you sure RE-POSTED it.
Lock your doors tonight, and if you hear the sound of nicorette being chewed by the handful, stay away from the windows!
There are also highly placed Republicans that want a Lamont win...figuring he would be a light weight and a decent republican candidate could knock him out in 2112..whereas if Lieberman wins no republican candidate is likely to knock him out..
that's middletown mayor seb giuliano--not ASs
DG...if you think Lieberman is beatable 1 on 1 then why havent the R's put up decent strong candidates in the past? The reason they havent is because he is still strong..your logic is incorrect and your R candidate i submit would have an easier time against Lamont..
It makes me wonder if Joe wasn't really a republican, and the is part of the Centrist dysfunction in the Democratic Party.
If Rove ever endorses you, you've crossed to the dark side.
I thought he was of integrity, not now.
(First, it's 2012 not 2112 that Lamont or whomever would be up for reëlection. Hopefully, we can get a Republican elected to the Senate before 2112! :-) ).
I don't know why many Republicans believe that Lamont would lose in 2012 after he'd have the power of incumbency and no three-way race. You'd think the time would be now. Some Republicans may have come to the conclusion that Lamont winning may help other Republicans, even if this seat is gone. Lamont and Lieberman probably vote together 95% of the time. But while Lieberman is regarded as something of a statesman and talks of bipartisanship, Lamont clearly doesn't look like he's headed in that direction, with Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc. being top supporters. Lamont has also come out and said he'd be against earmarks, any maybe someone that the right can rally against, much like they do with Ted Kennedy or Hillary now. I hardly get any direct mail these days, but I imagine that Kennedy and Hillary are often featured in direct mail by the right, and I also imagine that Lamont could be another bogeyman. In other words, Lamont may be something of a liability for the Democrats because of his perceived close association with MoveOn and DailyKos (and with the far left being his core support, he may become one of the 5 or so most left-leaning Senators, as this is where his donor base will lie).
Lamont is certainly going to try to be less bipartisan sounding than Joe. Interestingly, in Hawaii, Daniel Akaka is under fire from a more moderate sounding Democrat...
If anyone's interested- the open forum section under congressional races is getting heated. I do love a good debate.
Here is the Transcript Of Tony Snow's Briefing this morning.
Tony Snow really tap dances around this issue...
Q Does the President support the Republican candidate for Senate in Connecticut?
MR. SNOW: The President supports the democratic process in the state of Connecticut, and wishes them a successful election in November.
Q Wait a minute. I realize he supports democracy, but I'm wondering, does he actually support his own party's candidate?
MR. SNOW: I know that's not news --
Q Why aren't you committing -- why wouldn't the President commit support for the Republican candidate in that --
MR. SNOW: I don't know. Why do you ask? Is there something about the candidate that I should know about that would lead to judgments?
Q I'm just asking you --
MR. SNOW: No, that's just a --
Q -- it seems like a very natural thing, why wouldn't he support a member of his own party? Is it because he's well behind in the polls? Is it because the President likes Joe Lieberman? What's -- why not?
MR. SNOW: There may be -- there are a whole host of reasons the President -- I'm just not going to play.
Q It's not really a game --
MR. SNOW: It's not a game. It's not a game, but I'll -- okay, I'll tell you what. I'll refer you to the political office to give you the full judgments on that. I think you know the situation in Connecticut.
Q Following on Keith's question, so we should not routinely assume that the President is supporting the Republican nominee --
MR. SNOW: I think there's some peculiar characteristics going on in the Republican Party with the President (did he mean present) candidate, and why don't you wait and see what happens?
Q What are those characteristics?
MR. SNOW: I think I was asking you and you wouldn't play, so --
Q Are there any other states where there are peculiar characteristics, or is this one unique?
MR. SNOW: I think this one may be unique. But we'll find out. Look, I know what you're trying to do and it's great and it's great fun, but --
Q -- get an answer.
MR. SNOW: Yes, well, they know the answer.
Bluecoat...what should we do differently in the Middle East?
Weiker Liker -
Now that's some good stuff. Nice find.
Small observation - How great is it that JDS has to toss out al his signs and buy new ones with Glassman's name on them!
Cash down the toilet!
How great is that for the struggling CT lawn sign industry?
They must be backing this ticket.
Bush wants a strong GOP Candidate to replace Schlesinger who isnt going anywhere.
They need to run a strong GOP Candidate I know Jodi will not give up the Governor's chair but she is the best and brighest who could win and beat both Ned and Joe. She has a 75% approval rating she would beat both hands down.
Let them put someone else up for Governor- Nancy Johnson or Kevin O'Connor. This would be a GOP winner Anyone else I say no chance stay with Alan.
Think Connecticut Republicans have problems?
Ohio Dems have it worse.
Chris MC said... And that picture of her from the Sheriff's Department. Is she drunk?
Beats me.
Think that race is over?
Don't you?
Here we've got ourselves an Hamas supporter running in the 1st (and besides that he's really crazy!); all sorts of trouble and more coming with Alan in the senate race; how I'd love a diversion like this from the Dems here in CT.
Hmmmmmm, does Rosa drink at all do you know?
