Something Up in Stamford?

Secret service, D.C. plates, a bus, Joe Lieberman... Is this some sort of Monday surprise? Could be nothing... but who knows? This can only get weirder.

Update: Oops, looks like it was House Majority Leader John Boehner, whose name needs to be pronounced very carefully, sneaking into town to campaign with Rep. Shays.

I think we've all had a bit too much Lieberman-Lamont.

My bet is that those guys in earpieces are actually U.S. Capitol Policemen.

Some member of the Senate Leadership must be here.

None of them get Secret Service protection. Service protection, apart from Bush and family, is saved for Clinton (hillary and bill) and Gerald Ford and the Carters.

My guess is Hillary.

and nancy regan...

My guess is hilary, but her office will not confirm...

Oddly, Lieberman isn't scheduled to be anywhere near Stamford today, although there's a big hole in his schedule from noon to about 5:30pm. All this secrecy...

Once Ronnie passed, I believe they pull service for the widow. Although, I could be mistaken.

If it's Capitol Police, it could be any number of people. Not sure what Harry Reid gets you in CT?

YOu are mistaken...Nancy still has SS protection...and Carter does not...as a former president you can turn it away...he took it after office but has since sent em packin

Secret Service Authorization according to their website:

Today, the Secret Service is authorized by law to protect:
the President, the Vice President, (or other individuals next in order of succession to the Office of the President), the President-elect and Vice President-elect;
the immediate families of the above individuals;
former Presidents, their spouses for their lifetimes, except when the spouse re-marries. In 1997, Congressional legislation became effective limiting Secret Service protection to former Presidents for a period of not more than 10 years from the date the former President leaves office.
children of former presidents until age 16;
visiting heads of foreign states or governments and their spouses traveling with them, other distinguished foreign visitors to the United States, and official representatives of the United States performing special missions abroad;
major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, and their spouses within 120 days of a general Presidential election.

Sorry to end all of the crazy speculation, but it is House Majority Leader John Boehner who is in Stamford at a fundraiser for Rep. Chris Shays.

These guys are probably U.S. Capitol Policemen.

The Senate & House Leadership are afforded protection by them.

Were they wearing lapel pins? If so, they could be US Secret Service.

Anon. 2:45 is correct - Boehner is from Ohio.

Weicker Liker said...

So I was correct!!!

Congressman Boehner would be protected by U.S. Capitol Police.

Genghis Conn said...

He isn't. He's visiting Shays.

Oddly, he kind of snuck in with very little press.

Anonymous said...

yes, weicker liker, you are correct in that they were capitol police ... but, c'mon, I bet you thought it was for Lieberman???? Tell the truth.

Weicker Liker said...

Unsure why Boehner would be visiting Lieberman???

Where is the fundraiser for Shays taking place?

Anonymous said...

That's because Shays doesn't want to have anyone to know that he is having the Majority Leader in town for him - the same Leader that has OUTRAISED (for his leadership PAC) Mr. Tom DeLay, who held the same position.

Seems like he wants to believe he is an independent while using the Republican Right for money.

Don't be surprised if its someone for Joementum - Why would Boehner stop at Lieberman's HQ?

I'm sticking with Hillary.

Please, the Farrell camp has been trying to paint Shays as a right-winger for 3 years. To quote a famous Southerner: "That dog don't hunt." Just look at his votes for campaign finance reform, against the Bush energy bill, for stem cell research, etc. He is truly independent and moderate (fiscally more conservative, socially more liberal, just like the people he represents).

Interesting, though, that Farrell herself claims to be the "true moderate" when she has taken $100K from MoveOn.org. She represents the far left of the spectrum. Shays will win 53-47%.

I am Anon 302 returning...

Just to say that I don't think I altered any facts. Lieberman may have people across the street, but I do know that Boehner was there for Shays! That's all I've got for ya!

Anonymous said...

Even Chris Murphy has called Shays an 'independent congressman'.

Anonymous said...

FYI all - Check Shays' website - the Congressional Campaign one. He does not and has not ever had the Boehner event on there. I think that is trying to keep it quiet, how bout y'all?

False alarm...nothing too see here.

GC,

Joe probably has a big hole in his schedule to do TV stuff.

Ohio Congressman Will Not Seek Re-election

Anon. 4:09 - So I guess anything not on the Shays website is something he is trying to hide? Kind of ridiculous, don't you think? There sure are large blocks of times and days where he has nothing listed, he must be trying to hide them all. Interesting, just checked out Farrell's site, and she is missing large blocks from her daily calendar, I guess she is hiding something? Please, what an idiotic argument.

I have a question that maybe you can answer for me Anon. 4:09. Who would you support between the following candidates?

Candidate A supports the war, voted for the Bush energy bill, opposed universal health care and consistently opposes our state's teachers by supporting vouchers, or Candidate B who has a different position on each of those issues?

My guess is you support Candidate B because you share those views. So please tell me why your candidate for Congress, Ms. Farrell supports and is voting for Candidate A tomorrow? Actions speak louder than words don't you think?

Just to bury this one with the fishes - I have officially heard from Hillary's campaign and she is in New York today. Not Connecticut...

Shays way to the right on his vote for the House immigration reform bill that is also impractical. He's even to the right of his friend John McCain who represents a border state and has posed a much more practical bill.

Anonymous said...

Actually, to be both fair and balanced, I should point out that Shays is to the right of former border state Texas governor, George W. Bush, on changing our immigration laws. I really don't understand his position since the economy of his district relies on undocumented immigrants who work, pay taxes with their madeup SS#'s that the IRS collections department loves and never collect a dime from the govt.

Actually, Bluecoat, Shays is in the middle on immagration. He certainly does NOT favor amnesty, ala Bush, McCain, Clinton et al. (that is the position on the left). At the same time, he does not support the bill supported by the majority of the Rs, which would essentially require the impossible - throwing 12 million illegals out of the country.

At a community meeting, I heard Shays talk very convincingly about a middle of the road position that he supports/ offered: allow illegals to get proper documentation and work here, with some type of bluecard, but do not provide them with an immediate path to citizenship that, in effect, rewards illegal behavior and puts them ahead of those who are legally in line to become citizens. They should have to go take their place in line like everyone else, don't you think?

Anonymous said...

PS Bluecoat: It's kind of a stretch to say that the economy of the 4CD "relies on undocumented immigrants." Perhaps it relies a little bit more on NYC, financial institutions and the finance sector in general ... just a guess on my part though???

The course of this thread made me spit out the baby food I've been eating in fits of maniacal laughter.

Ned has surely hurt Diane. This is Exhibit A. Everything is being read through the JoeNedMentum lens- the Dem challengers have no air time, no mind share.

Neither McCain nor Bush support amnesty but nice spin - and what I said was absolutely correct and here's a link to Shays own webpage on immigration and I have heard Shays speak to the issue as well.
