Lieberman-Lamont-Schlesinger Debate Open Thread

Someone, somewhere, apparently had the bright idea of having a U.S. Senate debate in the middle of the afternoon, when most people are at work. Brilliant.

You can watch the debate live on NBC 30 (WVIT), or in streaming video on the web at the NBC 30 website, starting at 1pm.

Our own CGG will be checking in from the debate in Stamford to give us an idea of what's going on there (check the comments section of this post). If you miss it, the debate will be re-run at 7pm on NBC 30.

You can put your own thoughts here, too.

In the meantime, here are some pictures CGG has sent of the scene outside the Stamford Marriott. Click on a picture for a clearer view.

Here's what I know about the questioners for this debate:

Heinlein, from the Stamford Advocate, is biased toward Lieberman. Her own editorial page endorsed him in the election.

Steve Kotchko, of the Connecticut Radio Network, is one of the most milquetoast journalists in Connecticut.

I don't know about the TV panelist, as I don't watch TV much.

Hello everyone. I'm here at debate HQ in the press room. Outside of the hotel there are more than 70 Lamont supporters, 3 for Schlesinger, and as far as I could see none with signs or buttons for Lieberman.

The kiss float also made a return to the scene, parking across the street from the hotel.

Today's debate will be moderated by Tom Appleby who anchors News 12 Connecticut. The debate panelists are Joy Haenlein of the Stamford Advocate/Greenwich Times, Tom Monahan of NBC 30 News, and Steve Kotchko of Connecticut Radio Network.

Lamont on Henry Parker and Lieberman's civil rights record: I didn't understand, I didn't know what they meant. He apologized immediately after the event. Still need a good old fashion debate about affirmative action.

Schlisinger: THis is ridiculous bickering. When you bring in the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, these are the types of things that happen. I didn't do that. Both a guilty of race baiting, my memory goes back more than one or two years. Both Lamont and Lieberman probably both have good civil rights records. That's not the issue, what are going to do about social security, and some guy who wants to kill everyone in this room.

Lieberman: Alan made a good point there. I appreciate Ned's apology. How about an apology about other distoritions. You know that I never supported Bush's social security privitization. I've been against it the entire Bush administration. Stop it [the distortions] Concluded that privatization was a bad idea in the 90's. Let's talk about postive ideas. (Ned will buy pizza for the room if attacks going double-digits, from earlier)

Lamont: Bush says social security privatization is back on the table. You know where Ned Lamont stands.

Liberman: The people of Connecticut know where Joe Lieberman stands.

Schelisinger: They are both members of the Ostrich Club, on the deck of the Titanic. Social Security and Medicare are so underfunded, it makes the national debt a drop in the bucket. We can offer some solutions instead of being in the ostrich club, like Lieberman for 18 years. Lamont is against privatization. Washington spends the social security fund to balance budget. In 2000 Liberman said you wanted to put social security in lockbox. (Why is this guy screaming? He's sounding unhinged) We put the social security trust fund into mortgages of Americans. ANything else is irresponsible.

Lieberman: He begins by explaining what the lock box it is, and why in 6 years of the Bush administration that the surplus went away. THe answer to stopping the IOUs is to get our government back in balance. You got to pay for what you do, just like the Clinton administration. Protect our children and grandchildren from the debt that this administration produced.

Illegal Immigration:

Liebmerman: Our immigration system is broken. It's broken is the surge of illegal immigrants, and an enormous amount of legal immigrants are held back by bureaucracy. Senate sponsored a bipartisan bill, border security first, a guest worker program, big controversial questions...11 million undocumented aliens. You can do the political thing d arrest them all and get them out. Send inspectors to companies that hire them. Or give them a path to get illegal. Not an easy path, but 11 years to get there. It's a problem that can only be solved by working across party lines.

10/16/2006 01:42:00 PM
Blogger cgg said...

Lamont: Lieberan is half right. He's touting his volunteer teaching. Many of his students were immigrints. They are great kids who deserve a chance.

Fences are impractical.

Now Lamont's back to social security. He thinks it can be fixed. Healthcare is a bigger problem. We need an entirely new system.

10/16/2006 01:44:00 PM
Blogger turfgrrl said...

Illegal immigration:

Lamont: Joe is half right. There's no way to secure the borders as long as employers are hiring these people. Bush administration stopped enforcing at the employer level. 50 foot fence would just mean 51 foot ladder. The real problem is that healthcare is bankrupting small business and AMerica. As baby boomers retire we can't afford their healthcare. We need a healthcare system that is a basic right to all people and a better delivery system.

10/16/2006 01:44:00 PM
Blogger cgg said...

Schlesinger: Lamont makes good points, but doesn't offer any solutions.

Favors a touch policy on immigration. He is pro-wall and anti-amnesty.

10/16/2006 01:46:00 PM
Blogger turfgrrl said...

Illegal Immigration:

Schelsinger: There you go again Ned, telling everybody anything. You say national healthcare, if you think healthcare is expensive now, wait till its free. I want to build the walls, no road to citizenship. Now we have people flooding into our country. If he goes over the border to Mexico they will probably shoot him. He wants to sponsor legislation against illegal immigrants.

10/16/2006 01:46:00 PM
Blogger cgg said...

Lamont: You'll never fix healthcare until we take care of the 47 million uninsured.

(question is still about immigration BTW)

10/16/2006 01:48:00 PM

10/16/2006 01:49:00 PM
Blogger turfgrrl said...

Lamont: Lieberman's ad with 68% layoffs is false. After 9/11 our company had a tough time, we sold off divisions and some people left. Lieberman owes an apology. Started business from scratch. Washington doesn't have people who started businesses.

Schlesinger: Ned has no solutions. I've started with nothing. I've been able to get a keen insight into people. He's the only one who understands the little people. Ned your Round Hill Club membership says otherwise.

Liberman: Talks about why race is important, why ad was made. I've got a record, you can debate it, you might not like it. Ned doesn't have a record. NYTimes says he cut 68%, he cites this as a justification, then its fair to cite it. Most people would like to start a business from his kind of scratch. Your plan looks like a mandate to provide health insurance by small businesses.

Lamont: You said that for the last 18 years. (That small business needs help) Let small business buy into healthcare, like congress' health plan. You do have a record, you missed key votes on Homeland Security. You missed Medicare part D bill, we get half the share of transportation funding, half of our defense dollars we only get .68 back of every dollar spent, you have to show up for the votes.

Lieberman: You haven't denied that your plan is a mandate on small business. I have a 93% attendance record. I don't like missing votes, but I ran for VP during the times I missed some of those votes.

Joe Lieberman came off as a whiner and a blinking mad man. He even pointed at both Schlesinger and Lamont at the time as if he was at a gun show.
