Gubernatorial Debate Open Forum

What's better on a hot evening than a debate between Democratic gubernatorial candidates? They'll be live on WTNH (channel 8) at 8pm. Put your thoughts here as things happen. (Moderation's off, comments will be real time)

Destefano is not going to win the debate by continuing to say that Malloy relies on GWB

I don't think anyone trained destefano how to keep his answers within the time limits

I would agree with that

So far, this is doing little to help me in my current indecision. Both are doing pretty well, although trying to tie Malloy to Bush just doesn't work, nor do comments saying "my wife is a kindergarten teacher", or "my mother was a school nurse". Anyone have a millworker for a father?

So far, the moderator is winning. They are doing a good job on keeping this on track.

Other things to look at: Malloy has a 'Livestrong' bracelet on. Nice touch. The flag pin is a nice touch as well.

Malloy has the better tie.

Pretty sad that we are down to comparing ties

...you can't just talk the talk you have to walk the walk

Destefano:...Lisa Moody...

I'll give Destefano this - he uses his glasses well as a prop.

Malloy just did a good job of taking the incessant questions about eminent domain and moving it to a discussion about property taxes. DeStefano is doing a good job on following up on that thread, but he’s sort of rambling.

Now Dan says, “I couldn’t agree more with John”. Too bad we don’t have Lieberman there too attack people. It wouldn’t do anything to bring about an informed discussion of issues, but it sure would make things more lively.

Good spin on that one John

Ok, Malloy's closing was much clearer than Destefano's

And I can see that there was just a burning, white-hot interest in that debate.

While there was certainly no blow out, Malloy looked better prepared, sounded better prepared, and made it clear what he thinks need to be done. He also had the best one liner of the night "As governor, I look forward to working on that with you"

I think they would both make a good governor - I still have no clue who I am going to vote for!

DeStefano totally blew it on the ethics question -- a tremendous amount of bumbling, no clear answer on what New Haven has done. Kind of embarassing.

And I agree, he certainly wasn't prepared to answer during the time limit and his answers sometimes rambled, to the point where it was hard to understand what he was trying to say.

There is no question that Dan Malloy made his successful record as Mayor of Stamford clear to the voters. Crime down 60%, first universal preschool program in the state, 5,000 new jobs, over a hundred new units of affordable housing, AAA bond rating and so on. What did DeStefano credit himself as doing - chairing some blue ribbon committe on property tax?? Malloy was clear on the facts and on his record. I would have to say he won the debate.

Yeah Dan won but did anybody see it?

I would have to say that John DeStefano seemed a little more down to earth than Dan Malloy, however was unclear and just all over the place when it came to answering the questions. Dan Malloy seemed much more knowledgeable about the issues and answered the questions much better. I think this debate just made it harder for me to make a decision.

The Day has a poll for who won the debate http://www.theday.com/interactive/polls.aspx?re=da6b84e5-6feb-4f7c-a6b6-b47494a64e04
I just voted on it, and only 1 other person has also voted. I think this shows just how few people actually watched the debate. Its half sad, and after looking at the poll, kind of funny. However, I do feel bad for Dan Malloy because although both men are not very well know, Destefano has had the edge in the polls, and Dan is the one who needed to be seen tonight and make his case to the voters.
