Announcements
First, the good news. Anonymous comments are back. Anyone may post a comment on this site.
Second, the bad news. Comments are now moderated. This means that there may be a significant time lag between when you make a comment and when it appears on the site.
We will be trying things this way for the next week or so. If it works, comments will stay this way.

An unfortunate, time consuming, but undeniably necessary step.
I really appreciate your commitment in the matter GC.

And see--the time lag there wasn't so bad. During the day, when I'm near a computer, it shouldn't be too long.
It really is a shame that this is necessary but totally understandable...perhaps, if those that caused this step to be needed, and you know who you are, could show more civility it won't be needed long-term.
GC--haven't been around recently, can you say what prompted this new safeguard?
Sure, Rear_Admiral,
It mostly came from my own frustration at the way the comments section of this site was devolving into a flame war, and my repeated calls for civility were apparently falling on deaf ears.
I figured that I had to try something, and this was it. This is temporary--we'll be switching back to the old format next week--but it may become permanent in the future if things don't change.
GC, I must admit I wasn't of fan of doing away with anonymous postings, but it did work well until the handful of extremists supporters of candidate L (pick one)made it personal.
Is there a way to suspend repeat offenders for some period of time?
Alas, no. Another possibility is switching to a comment system like HaloScan which allows users to be banned.
I understand where you are coming from. However, I'm seeing long delays to postings. Is there something you can do for those who tend to post later in the day and you may be away from your desk. It's hard to get good feedback and responses to posting when delays occur.
Thanks CG
The sometimes long delays in comments beig posted are killing the debate here.
