This morning, a source at the National Republican Senatorial Committee confirmed in a phone interview that the party will not help Schlesinger or any other potential Republican candidate in Connecticut, and it now favors a Lieberman victory in November.
"We did a poll and there is no way any Republican we put out there can win, so we are just going to leave that one alone," said the NRSC source.
Instead, the NRSC is pulling for Lieberman over Ned Lamont, who rode an anti-war message to a victory in the Aug 8 primary.
I have to wonder whether all the support Lieberman is getting from Republicans will come back to bite him, especially if independents are in an anti-Republican mood in November.

I find it hard to believe that they have poll that says that Kevin O'Connor had no chance of winning a three way race...
Listen, this is no surprise; nor is it evidence of a "deal" or a "conspiracy" between Lieberman and the Republicans. This is called playing the cards you're dealt.
Due to his lack of name recognition, lack of financial support and the issues surrounding his gambling, Schlesinger's campaign was on life support even before the Democrat primary. It now appears that the winner of this race will be either Lieberman or Lamont. As a voter, if you know Schlesinger has no chance to win, and you have a preference between the other two candidates, doesn't it make sense to vote for one of the other two? I think that is just common sense. As a voter I want to make sure my vote counts. That is why the Rs that I know are voting for Lieberman, as he is seen as the lessor of two evils. Think back to the 2000 Presidential race - do you think the people who voted for Nader (most of whom would have voted for Gore) would like to do it all over again?
Rest assured, if some miracle happens and Schlesinger vaults in the polls to within striking distance, you will see the Rs in DC change their tune fast (just like the Ds switched from Joe to Ned in an instant). They don't see that happening, nor do they see AS getting out of the race. Even if he did, does anyone really think their is an R candidate that could make a serious run at this? Probably not.
Gabe - How does O'Connor (or any other candidate for that matter) raise $3-5 million in the next 30 days? Unlike Ned, he can't simply write a check from his daddy's or wife's check book.
Cue the guy who says "ORCHULLI!!!"...
Please please keep this guy Schlesinger in the race. He will only go back to Derby as its finance manager and along with Phil Robertson ( another dinosaur) undue whatever good the Republican administration has started. Alan destroyed education in that town and now we find out he was at the casino most of the time.
ORCHULLI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Message to Lamont...
In the last 3 weeks you went from 13 points up to 12 points down..
Your campaign manager made a very intemperate statement about Waterbury. While up 13 points your staff brought in very controversial figures ( jackson, sharpton and waters) when softer folks would have been better..
Your staff filed wrong and incorrect forms and were fined and admonished by the FEC...your staff has no experience....Lowell Weicker is heading your " Independants for Lamont" even when confronted with the Q Poll evidence that Weicker's approval rating among independant's is 27%..
Right now you have about 2/3 of the Democrats and a small slice of the independants while Joe has 1/3 of the Democrats and 3/4 of the independants..
To have any shot in the race you need to revamp your staff and outside advisors from the top down and headline " centrist and more moderate issues" and actually believe in those issues...
Anon. 12:54 - I believe Gallo admitted publicly that he vetted Alan Schlesinger, but not Alan Gold.
Anon. 12:57 - Go back to your job at Republican HQ and try to get something productive done.
Anon. 12:57 - Go back to your job at Republican HQ and try to get something productive done.
Take my word for it - whoever that is, isn't at 1010.
Anon 1246 - Money is another matter... What they said was that they polled and there was no Republican who had a chance. Thats where my comment came from.
Will AS be on the ballot as Alan Schlesinger or ALan Gold? Is there any truth to the rumor that voting is also being done by wampum card?
Gabe, Anon. 12:46 here. Good point. I did not read the article as closely as you did. I wonder who the RNSC put in the poll (I am an active R and have not even heard of a poll being conducted).
That being said, other than Rell or Simmons, Shays & Johnson, there is no Republican with any significant statewide name recognition. As a result, no one would show well in an early poll. Just as Ned did not show well early in his race. Maybe that's the answer the NRSC wanted....
Anon 1246/151 - I am with you. Except for the four who are running for something right now and KOC whohas a better job as it is (especially if he wants to be a judge), there is no one jumping off my mind.
That said, I agree that I think the NRSC probably put a poll in the field to get the result they wanted and then happily got that result...
GC: Are we screaning anything? AS admitted to the gambling, but I have not seen any facts to support some of these other scurrilous allegations. Let's be a little fair here.
Gaberooni, will you be taking O'connor's class at UCONN law this semester? Perhaps you could pose the question then?
Message to Joe Lieberman:
Senator, I just received a lovely piece on you from the US Chamber of Commerce. It is encouraging me to vote on August 8th.
The problem is, I just checked my calendar and found out that it's August 16th.
I would have remembered to vote for you had it arrived in time.
ACR,
You think Fat and Stupid were consulted on this or did Rove just figure they were Fat and Stupid and weren't worth consulting after he talked to Rowland?
Anon 2:32.
Fat and stupid...who are you John Rowland?
Thanks. (robble robble)
Any vote a Republican candidate gets comes from Joe Lieberman.
In the meantime, Ned Lamont will continue to gain support from independents who (a) oppose the war, and (b) see the Cheney fear mongering and Waterbury Rep-American commie-baiting as not resembling what they see and hear when Lamont speaks.
Goodbye Joe.
