New Haven's "No-Tell" Policy Bad For Our Security

As I read through the news this morning, there were many different topics to choose from for my first "front-page" post. Do I address the Connecticut General Assembly's never-ending Government Administation and Elections Committee investigation of Governor Rell's Chief of Staff, Lisa Moody? Do I comment on the resignation of former DCF Chief Kristine Ragaglia from her fraud investigative position at DSS? Do I comment on tonight's Lieberman-Lamont debate (which has the interest of most of the readers at this time)?

I have chosen, however, to address the City of New Haven's "No Tell" policy of not reporting illegal immigrants to federal authorities. As the New Haven Register points out, a total of 68 cities and state governments have policies declining to enforce federal civil immigration violations for community policing reasons. While I understand that many cities/states cannot bear the financial/manpower burden of enforcing the federal immigration laws, I find the practice of not reporting immigration violations, simply because they are civil violations, to be deplorable and a threat to our national security.

I do not share the position of many of my conservative colleagues that we should close the borders to immigration. This would be quite un-American, as our nation is one of immigrants. However, illegal immigration brings with it a threat to our citizens. I find it amazing that a man running for Governor would make it his policy to turn a blind eye to the law (any law). I placed a telephone call to the Mayor Dan Malloy's office and was informed that, to the best of their knowledge, the City of Stamford does not have a similar policy.

The adoption of "no-tell" policy is a severe hindrance to the federal government's enforcement of our immigration laws and a risk to our security. Instead of ignoring illegal immigration, our local/state law enforcement agencies should be cooperating with the federal government to enforce the laws of our land by reporting incidents of illegal immigration. I don't think that is too much to ask.

If New Haven police did ask and it was determined a person was an illegal and the feds were called nothing would happen anyway.

The Federal government isn't enforcing it's own laws and won't take custody of someone simply because they're illegal.

Please forgive me for the lengthy web address, I haven't quite figured out how to save the link as a title only.

Place this in front "<" no space"A" one space then "href=" now add the url; then at the end of the address this">" then write whatever you like here then finish it with this"<"no space"/"no space"a"no space">"

Right click on the following link and you can see how it the origianl link when you left click PROPERTIES.

It's almost impossible to show how it's done on a site where it's enabled.

Add < A href=url address here>comment here > < / a > the only real space is between the first A and href.

Nothing about Lisa Moody and her possible perjury?

What nothing about a year old memo given to the press but not to Republican members of the committee?

Come on now.

Also good to click on "help" up top, if anyone ever needs an HTML lesson or refresher. I put a bunch of examples there.

While I was in favor of TG initially, I have flip-flopped. First post gets a response from a candidate. Total BS!

End Snark

Welcome!

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Traffic Safety Facts, “The economic cost of speeding-related crashes is estimated to be $40.4 billion each year.” They go on to say that in 2004, “13,192 lives were lost in speeding related crashes.” In the appendix, they report that in 2004, 98 people in Connecticut lost their lives in speeding related accidents.

To borrow from The True Gentleman, the fact remains that speeders driving illegally in our country. I don’t mean to denigrate people who are so frightened about immigrants illegally in our country. There are many illegal behaviors that people participate in, some have significant impact on peoples lives. Others have smaller impacts.

If The True Gentleman is so concerned about illegal activity that is threatening lives in Connecticut, I would encourage him to focus on issues like speeding.

Derby Conservative, I was hoping that Genghis’ new policy would have been done something to prevent unwarranted attacks like your recent comment. In his post on June 23, he asked people to demonstrate civility and refrain from name-calling.

Even though I disagree with The True Gentleman on the importance of the immigration issue, I stand with CGG and Gabe in congratulating him on a very good post that brought Mayor DeStefano into the discussion, albeit briefly. It is rare for public figures to engage in discussions in the blogosphere. They have busy lives and the discussions in the blogosphere are rarely the best use of time.

I feel confident that if you, or others come up with some great insights into the issue of immigration, members of Mayor DeStefano’s staff will get that information to him, and if it is particularly noteworthy, he may return to provide additional thoughts.
