SOTS Will Audit Optical Scan Machines

From the Secretary of the State's office:
Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz said today that her office and the University of Connecticut’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering will perform random audits following the November 7th election in cities and towns using optical scan voting technology in place of lever machines. The audits will be done to examine how the machines worked and to ensure the reliability of Connecticut’s voting technology.

Secretary Bysiewicz said her office will work with UConn Computer Science Professor Alexander Shvartsman, whose department this year formed a partnership with the Office of the Secretary of the State to assist in certification and acceptance testing of the new voting technology, as well as the citizens’ group TrueVoteCT. These audits will be performed randomly in the twenty-five (25) Connecticut towns that will begin using the optical scan voting machines in place of lever machines this year.

This is a good idea, especially given the fact that a lot of people are jumpy about moving over to new voting technologies.

Susan is terrific. To have the energy to follow up is wonderful. I'm happy that she is seeking reelection.

Lieberman=Zell Miller?.

"Mel Sembler, a former Republican National Committee finance chairman, helped organize a reception that raised about a "couple hundred thousand dollars" for Lieberman, who was in attendance. Sembler said the event at his firm's office in St. Petersburg, Fla., drew a mix of Republican, Democratic and independent donors."

"Sembler, who is board chairman of the Sembler Company, a real estate and shopping center development company, said he has worked hard to raise money for Libby's legal defense fund."

"It's amazing to go to all this hard work when a crime never got committed," said Sembler, who also described himself as "dear friends" with Cheney."

"The Libby defense fund's steering committee includes a few Democrats and several Republicans; Sembler is its chairman."

Amazing! A Libby/Cheney/Bush buddy decided to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Revoltin' Joe Lieberman. Any idea why?

I'm glad to see that the SOTS is able to dedicate some time to the duties that are actually within the purview of the office she holds. (Several months ago she held a stem cell research forum at her office.) Let's hope she performs this task well, unlike when she sought bids for new voting machines.

Susan is terrifc? Are we talking about the same Susan Bysiewicz from Connecticut??? A poor Secretary of the State at best.

Why are we not using electronic (ATM-style) voting machines with hard copy print outs? This optical scan stuff is as bad as the lever machines. I do like the auditing and the slow roll-out of the program.

Nice to see class acts like MikeCT and The Architect are adhering to the "no namecalling" policy. And they wonder why blog-writing so often gets discounted and laughed at?

Good job by the SOTS in finding a good technology and taking steps to examine how well they work after the election. She's doing her job - and I'm sure she's strong enough to deal with such enlightened critics as MikeCT and The Architect.

Susan B does not come close to doing her job. She is a horrible SofS who is only there waiting for the next, higher office she wants to occupy.

Anon 945, while I would agree the architect's comments were a bit unnecessary, MikeCT is loaded with fact and has no name calling.

bluecoat, you seem to be the online link buff which shows you read a lot (it's a compliment)...do yourself a favor, google Susan b and take a look at what you find. You may change your tune.

Interpreted as if you were saying she was walking around with a target on her back for no reason. My apologies.
