Why is Don Rumsfeld Still Secretary of Defense?

"The secretary of defense continued to push on us ... that everything we write in our plan has to be the idea that we are going to go in, we're going to take out the regime, and then we're going to leave," Scheid said. "We won't stay."

Scheid said the planners continued to try "to write what was called Phase 4," or the piece of the plan that included post-invasion operations like occupation.

Even if the troops didn't stay, "at least we have to plan for it," Scheid said.

"I remember the secretary of defense saying that he would fire the next person that said that," Scheid said. "We would not do planning for Phase 4 operations, which would require all those additional troops that people talk about today.

"He said we will not do that because the American public will not back us if they think we are going over there for a long war."

...."In his own mind he thought we could go in and fight and take out the regime and come out. But a lot of us planners were having a real hard time with it because we were also thinking we can't do this. Once you tear up a country you have to stay and rebuild it. It was very challenging."

I believe the name of this blog is Connecticut LOCAL Politics. Argument for or against Donald Rumsfeld should not take place within the context of this blog, as clearly, it has no direct relevance to Connecticut LOCAL politics.

anonymous 9:33- And in 2003 Lieberman said:

10/26/03 Face the Nation appearance:

SCHIEFFER: Do you think this means that perhaps the president ought to change secretaries of Defense?

LIEBERMAN: Well, look, ultimately the buck stops at the president's desk. He's the commander in chief. He has to take accountability if things don't work well. I'll tell you this -- that Secretary Rumsfeld told the truth in that private memo, that they haven't been as trusting of the American people to tell us the truth about the fact that we're not doing as well as they -- that we should be doing in the war on terrorism and the war in Iraq. And the worst thing about Don Rumsfeld's time at the Pentagon, the uniform military feel deeply that he doesn't respect them, doesn't listen to them. That's not the kind of relationship that we need between a secretary of Defense and the military.

Judgment about whether he stays or not is up to President Bush, but if I were president, I'd get a new secretary of Defense.

SCHIEFFER: You would?

LIEBERMAN: I would.

To answer the question this diary poses is easy.

The reason is because your President, just like your Governor, is an idiot.

Anon... unless you live in another country or state. Our President, our Governor... don't like the man or women, fine, respect the office.

I dislike Rell. I hate George Bush. Rell has done nothing good for the state. Bush has set our country back decades.

I heard Keith Crane wants to be Secretary of Defense and bring home the Iraq troops now!!!!

Wow! Great analysis! Amazing job of presenting a block quote without a hint of analysis.

But at least you got the post about Joe Lieberman's campaign violating his Seante office's privacy policy off the top of the screen...
[laughs devilishly]
Now no one will find it...

Sam's refusal to back gay marriage has apparently upset Rennie.

More of the same out of Rennie.

Lisa Moody wouldn't let him get past the door in his quest for an appointment (judge not a chance now that's for sure) and if you'll recall no one printed more anti-Moody stuff than Kevin and his friends at the Courant.
