Senate 23: Gomes Wins

The AP is reporting that Bridgeport City Councilman Ed Gomes(D) has been elected to replace former Senator Ernest Newton, who resigned over corruption charges. No word on margin of victory or turnout. Gomes was the endorsed candidate of the Democratic Party.

No contest....

"Unofficial final totals showed Gomes winning with 2,273 votes, or 49 percent of the 4,596 ballots cast, the Connecticut Post reported. Second place went to Democratic state Rep. Charles Don Clemons, who finished with 951 votes."

I am just back from spending the day helping out with Ed Gomes' campaign. There was a great turnout of DeStefano supporters and union members to help with the campaign. It was a lot of fun, and it was great to Ed win so strongly. I believe that he won in every precinct.

I spent time in both Bridgeport and in Stratford. In Stratford, it was great to see Jim Miron and his supporters manning the phones as well.

And of course, you can read my comments about it on the DeStefano Blog

Just when you thought you'd run out of special elections, there will be another in East Hartford as Rep. Melody Currey resigns to work as Mayor of East Hartford. The Courant cites three town council candidates as expressing interest - Democrats Henry Genga and William Horan Jr. and Republican Stephanie Labanowski. The special election will likely be in January. East Hartford has a 4 to 1 Democratic voter registration edge.

Also, the CT Post covers the Gomes win.

That special election will be in 2006, at least. We can finally close the book on 2005.

Will that be the first election to use new voting machines, which are set to be certified in December?

Yeah, DeStefano supporters really helped out eating the catering at the victory party. I was there all day, and didn't see any such 'great turnout'. I saw you, Aldon- but I think DeStefano's army waited till the party to show up.

Don't know where you may have been - but there were at least a dozen DeStefano people throughout Bridgeport and Stratford. Most of us did not hang around headquarters very long but were poll standing, canvassing and phone banking at various locations. Very few of us stayed for the party - so I really don't know who you are referring to.

I was in Bridgeport, so that might explain it. I didn't mean to be mean, I just don't want people taking credit for things they didn't do.
If they were in Stratford, then that's great.
I'd like to second the congrats to our newly elected officials as well!

AYBABTU,

Early in the day, I was out door knocking with the SEIU in Bridgeport. The only time I was at headquarters was between door knocks. After the second stint, I went over and spent the last several hours in Stratford.

I believe others from the DeStefano campaign were out poll standing, but I don't have the details.

When I spoke with folks at the headquarters in Bridgeport, they said that the need was greater in Stratford, which I believe is why most DeStefano supporters ended up over there.

Unfortunately, the majority of the DeStefano supporters that volunteered didn't even make it to the party.

All of that said, what is important is that Gomes won handily. It was great to see so many people pull together for that and I hope it is a good precursor to 2006.

See this. But be warned: it's geeky.
