Connecticut Politics and Elections: Coverage, Analysis, Maps and Commentary
Joe Courtney went after Simmons today on the Karl Rove CIA leak. I don't think this will carry much weight. It is clear that most voters in the 2nd district do not see Congressman Simmons as a yes man to Tom Delay. Courtney and Sullivan tried that line in 2002 and 2004 respectively and look where it got them. The big issue in the 2006 race will be whether or not the Groton sub base closes. Everything else is secondary. Courtney is certainly working hard to get his name out there. 2006 will probably be Simmons toughest race yet.
I, on the other hand, believe that Courtney's attack on Simmons captures an important part of the political dynamic. There are those Republicans, like Rove and Delay that exhibit a pattern of deception as part of their continued abuse of power. Those Republicans are destroying this country. Then, there are those Republicans, like Simmons, who put their head in the sand and pretend that nothing is going on.As the old saying goes, "All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing."Simmons is doing nothing. More and more people are getting fed up with the deceptions and abuse of power by the extreme right wing as well as getting fed up with good men that do nothing.
Elpie is right, if only because swing voters dont' care about "insider baseball", which is what the whole Rove thing is. Swing voters care about jobs, taxes, and other pocketbook issues....and the sub base is issue #1 in the Second District.Only people getting worked up about Rove are people who vote Democratic already....
Simmons is no stranger to torture.http://www.newmassmedia.com/nac.phtml?code=new&db=nac_fea&ref=14651
Anonymous, I don't know what that article has to do with anything. I can't speak to what Congressman Simmons did in Vietnam as I, obviously, was not there, but I can tell you that this issue probably cost Sam Gejdensen quite a few votes in an election where every vote mattered. Democrats would be wise not to bring up Vietnam again in 2006.
I'm not sure that I would characterize Simmon's inability to stand up for what is right as 'insider politics'.
Republican and Democrat municipal endorsements happened all over the state this week.
Dave,Yes, I'll be gathering as many of those stories as I can over the next couple of days. If you (or anyone else) sees any, post them!
About Simmons...If that ad where Simmons morphs into Bush and back again (run by the otherwise inept Sullivan last year) didn't work, any other attempt to tie him to DeLay probably won't either.
In other news, Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.
