Open Forum

Some Republicans have been griping about Shays's endorsement of Lieberman: Ex-Donkey Blog calls him a "liberal weenie." I still think it's interesting that none of the big-name Republicans have recoiled in horror from this. Yet.

John McCain will stump for Rell at a pricey fundraiser later this month. McCain's a great choice: CT Republicans favored him over Bush in 2000, remember. I wonder if Rell would play some part in a McCain Administration, should one come to pass in 2009. A big victory this November would put her in the national Republican spotlight, for sure.

There is still trouble over the clean contracting bill, which has twice been vetoed because of anti-privatization language. Some of that language has been removed, but now Rell wants it all gone. Is there a reason why the privatization stuff has to be in this bill?

Lastly, the Navy, which has been forced to keep the Groton Sub Base open, will now commence bleeding it dry. Three of the subs stationed there will move to the west coast. One of them, irritatingly, is the USS Connecticut.

What else is going on, today?

genghis, after seeing the interest in our CT races i thought maybe it would be a good idea if someone was able to analyze the last elections when challengers beat incumbents. simmons over gejdenson and maloney over franks. also, would be interesting to see how many races here in CT went to candidates who raised less money than their opponents. shays comments make me wonder if there was any truth to the rumor that he was thinking about switching parties but pelosi said no thanks.

the comments still aren't working right but let's see what happens for the hell of it with an I told you so: the Navy is shutting down the subbase; Dodd slowed it down like I said all along.

A couple of people in the last thread mentioned the New Haven tax raise, which is really quite substantial. The Yale Daily News had an article about it as well.

These two Democratic gubernatorial candidates have two things to run on: their records being swell and Jodi's record being poor. So far CT voters either don't know or don't care that our economy hasn't improved under Rell, so their records as Mayors are critical if they want to have a chance.

Tax hikes and revenue raising gimmicks in New Haven paint DeStefano in exactly the light the Republicans want him in.

Comments seem okay, now...

Good idea, PMD. Maybe later this month.

Leading neo-con intellectual and author of the 1993 best-selling "The End of History and the Last Man", Francis Fukuyama appeared on NPR's Morning Edition today.

His about-to-be-released book America at the Crossroads:Democracy, Power, and the Neoconservative Legacy confirms what common sense knows: that neo-conservatism is a bankrupt and discredited ideology, victim of its own deep structural flaws, and the Bush Administration's foreign policy is an unmitigated disaster.

I can't wait for my copy to arrive.

speaking of taxes...I hate taxes but if its a choice between schools and taxes I pick taxes, a choice between cops and taxes, i pick cops. Towns have tough choices to make, and I think Rell isn't making them any easier.

I think that alot of the municipal losses you saw in 2005 was because of tax hikes, both Rs and Ds lost over this issue. Its not just some towns, its all over the state. I think that you will see many more tax increases this year with Rell robbing state programs and aid to towns to pay for her election year gimmicks.

Bob Ward Stepping Down....

The longtime Republican leader of the state House of Representatives announced Wednesday he won't seek re-election in November.

Robert M. Ward, R-North Branford, said it's time for him to retire from the legislature. The 53-year-old father of four was first elected to the 86th Assembly District seat in 1984, representing North Branford, East Haven, Wallingford and Guilford.

He has served as the House minority leader for the past 12 years, making him the longest-serving legislative leader in Connecticut history.

"I have loved the challenges of leading this amazing caucus, but there comes a time to look for new challenges," Ward said. "For me, that time has come."

Ward announced his retirement privately to House Republicans and later the full House, where he received two standing ovations Wednesday. Ward said he'll continue to focus on the legislative session, which ends on May 3.

Lawmakers typically announce their retirements at the end of the session. But Ward said he wanted to give Republicans plenty of time to find a candidate for his seat.

"I know that this had to be a very, very tough decision for you Bob. I know how much you love this chamber of ours," House Speaker James Amann, D-Milford, told Ward before the full House of Representatives. "I have always respected you and your word is always steadfast. When you told me something, Bob, I never doubted it."

Ward said he has no immediate plans to seek higher office. He also said he doesn't expect Gov. M. Jodi Rell will ask him to be her running mate in this year's election.

Looks like the Malloy campaign blog, talkCT, is starting to get some steam.

After getting linked to the site from a recent Newsletter I got, it looks like the blog has a new entry almost everyday. It also looks like they even have guest bloggers now.

At least one of the Gubernatorial candidates has a blog that reads a bit less like one giant Press Release.

Some of the photo's are neat too.

Is there a dem lined up already to run for Ward's open seat?

Link to Ward story.

Surprising. I wonder why now?

Democrats ran Ashley Clow Joiner against Ward last time around. She lost by 14%. North Branford's the biggest town in that district. If I recall correctly, N. Branford elected a Democratic First Selectman this past election, right? His seat could be in play.

As of now, I don't think anyone has officially declared for that seat.

Last time, Ashley Clow Joiner ran against Ward. She got 43% of the vote which is pretty good for a first time candidate against a very well known incumbent. I don't know if she is considering running again, but it would be good if she did.

Searching around online, I'm not finding any other candidates being listed.

The thing with a State Rep race is anyone can win it if they are willing to knock on every door in the District. Hopefully the Dems down there will find someone who fits that mold to take the seat.

Connecticut Approves the Use of Venezuelan Heating Oil

I knew that the state was looking into doing this, but surprised that Rell OK'd it. I'd be curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

Ward steps down now because the delegates to the conventions need to be selected this month. Also, it allows the leadership battle to begin early.

"Leadership battle" ??? Somehow I don't see anybody knocking Cafero off. Justa hunch.

I see DeStefano proposed an economic plan... is he going to hire Bob Matthews (or some other big wig who's gotta a big city grant) as jobs czar?

BTW, given how red North Branford is on the Presidential and Gubernatorial maps the GOP should be able to replace Ward or the locals will have some 'splainin to do
