DeStefano Endures New Haven Challenge

First Hartford, Waterbury, Bridgeport and Meriden lined up behind his rival. Now John DeStefano almost lost some of the delegates from his own city.
Mayor John DeStefano's New Haven Democratic Town Chairwoman, Susie Voigt (pictured), was easily reelected at a convention at Sports Haven Monday night. But it was a disappointing night for DeStefano's gubernatorial campaign. His allies had to fight to elect a slate of loyal hometown delegates to the state nominating convention...

...Party Vice-Chair Norma Rodriguez-Reyes announced the formation of a slate of state convention delegates to challenge the one put together by party leaders. The party leaders' 69-member slate was entirely committed to DeStefano. The challenge slate -- titled "Practicing Democracy in New Haven" -- consisted of pro-DeStefano, pro-Malloy, and neutral delegates. What this slated had in common: They were all elected ward co-chairs or public officials, the same criteria for delegates named to the last gubernatorial convention four years ago. (Bass)

Not so good. The DeStefano slate won easily, but the fact that there was a challenge slate at all looks terrible to Democrats who might want a candidate they can unify behind.

It's very, very premature to count DeStefano out. He has the support of labor unions, and has a lot of money left in the bank. He also has higher name recognition than Malloy, and the few polls released on the governor's race show him doing slightly better against Rell than Malloy.

There will be a lot for delegates to think about.

DeStefano has been sliding since november....its now a tossup and frankly his staff and strategists are terrible. They had this race in their grasp in November and blew it badly...

DeStefano has the presence and chrisima of a dead frog...his media should have started already...how does he expect to win in November against Grandma Puddin Pie whit her 80% approval rating when he hasnt even tried to get her numbers down.

Speaks volumes about DeStefano's likability. The Democrats in his own city can't unify behind him.

It is looking like Molloymentum. The fundraising numbers will tell the tale. If all DeStefano can say in April is that he is still sitting on the lead he built while Malloy was sidelined, he has to reassess his viability as a statewide candidate.

Still looking for Aldon's moral outrage over the subversion of democracy in New Haven. He promised to attack Suzie Voigt just a day or two ago if she pulled the same maneuvers in New Haven that he was whining about in Hartford. C'mon Aldon, let her have it!

Molloymentum? Sounds like DLC Dan & DLC Joe are still best of buddies.

The delegate challenge is directly attributable to what took place this winter, where long-term Board of Alderman President Jorge Perez was ousted in favor of Carl Goldfield.

Dan Malloy sought to exploit the existing rift, and God knows what unholy promises he made to Jorge Perez, ex-Mayor John Daniels, and Perez backers to get them to turn traitor.

Certainly this was bad for DeStefano, and for the image of the New Haven Democratic Party,-- but the real louts here are Perez and Malloy.

Real campaigns aren't built on cheap stunts.

"Real campaigns aren't built on cheap stunts."

You mean like totally uckfayed, stage-managed delegate selection in your own home town?

G.C.: regarding your comment Not so good. To think every Donkey in NH buys in to DeStefano would be hard for me to beleive. And it's better to get that stuff out now. I happen to think JDS has some decent policywonk for-starters going on that need to be aired but I would never in a million years vote for him.

Pleeeze. It is no secret in Democratic circles that DeStefano and his gang are running frantically all over the state trying to line-up delegates ANY WAY THEY CAN AND USING ANY MEANS POSSIBLE.

And I, along with anon 12:39 am still waiting to hear from Aldon, the voice of the DeStefano campaign on this blog, on his indignation of how the delegate selection process unfolded in New Haven.

Aldon? Aldon? Are you out there?

Oh, me too.

Though Aldon will no doubt have some equivicating explanation and encourage us all to sing Kumbayah ...

I just hope at some point he gets tired of explaining away DeStefano's moral ambiguities, which he never quite manages to equate to the failings he sees so plainly in Malloy and Rell.

Delegate battles are not complicated but you do need experienced people on your team to win them. That's why Malloy is going to walk out of the convention with 65% of the vote - or more. Oh, that and the fact that he is about 100 times more electable than JDS and people are figuring that out.

I'm not voting for Lieberman, and I'm not voting for Malloy. They share the same lousy campaign team, btw...

Real voters, even in primaries, don't know or care who the "campaign team" is, they only know who they like and who they think can win in November.

No, the delegate challenge is directly attributable to the fact that half of the Democratic leaders in New Haven DON'T LIKE JOHN DESTEFANO.

Is every Democrat who has ever crossed DeStefano a "lout"? That'd make for a pretty long list of louts.

There's something the DeStefano supporters on this board have to accept - a lot of people, A LOT OF PEOPLE don't like him. He beat Daniels in a good race back in the day, and has continued to get elected on the power of the incumbancy and by cashing in the city contractors.
