Schlesinger: More Details Emerge

A story today in the Journal-Inquirer is shedding a little more light on Alan Schlesinger's gambling.
The viability of Schlesinger's candidacy was called into question Wednesday when Bradley Beecher, a retired Connecticut State Police officer whose last assignment was as commander of the Casino and Licensing Unit, forwarded to reporters copies of e-mails he had exchanged with Schlesinger and Rell.

Beecher, in his e-mail to the governor, said he was "able to document a long history of improper relationships between Connecticut Republicans and Connecticut casinos" and described Schlesinger's candidacy as "a train wreck in progress."

He said Scheslinger had called him and said he plays blackjack in casinos under phony names because, apart from using the pseudonyms to take advantage of "comped" items like free rooms and meals, "he is a card counter and wants to avoid detection."

Beecher, who after retiring from the state police worked as an investigator for the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Commission before the tribe eliminated his position in 2004, wrote that Schlesinger "is no longer permitted" at Mohegan Sun because of his card counting.

He also said Schlesinger had volunteered that he lost "at least $50,000" at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

...

"I have no idea what he's talking about," Schlesinger added. "I rarely go to casinos anymore because I don't have the time. The last time I went was before I ran for office to meet a friend from Florida on vacation in Las Vegas. I've not been dying to go to a casino. Last year, there were maybe three or four times I went to a casino."(Michak)

Make of it what you will. There is/was supposed to be some sort of press conference involving Schlesinger today--we'll let you know more as we find it out.

The other issue is that a person who racks up gambling debt (I think AS put it at +/-$50K) and isn't independently wealthy presents just as big an issue as a person who is a big winner and doesn't declare his winnings---debt can be a cruel mistress.

Schlesinger is a lousy candidate, just another along the lines of Jack Orchuli (without the money). No one (R's, I mean) thought there was a chance in heck that Lieberman would lose. If they did, there would have been a much higher name recognition candidate. Now that Joe's weakness is showing, the R's realize this is their one shot to take him out. He is vulnerable, Lamont is there to siphon off liberal votes. This is the year to get Joe. But they are stuck with Schlesinger. I thought they would have bought alan off and he would pull out voluntarily. Apparently, that is not the case. Now he will be pilloried until he steps down. Then we will have O'Connor (who would lose his job), Stewart (who would not), or McKinney (who could run for both) step in for the good of the party. Alan will be gone by the end of the month.

In regards to the sudden issues surrounding Alan Schlesinger, I told all you folks over the past few months that he was a terrible candidate.

And here we are with these relevations.

In regards to possible replacements, has anyone given any thought to Phil Steele? He ran for Congress in 2002 against John Larson. He does have decent name recognition.

You're kidding right?

Has it dawned on you that maybe this would be a really good time to keep my mouth shut?

Email me a phone # (w/out a recording device attached to it) and I'll be happy to chat with you at:

Too many in my own party already know who I am - I'm not about to post anything in here or anyplace else.

I may be opinionated as all get out, but I'm not crazy.

Secondly..do you all agree with me that your party would never endorse a anti-war republican...

It would be over my dead body (and probably a few others as well) and I do have one of the 72 votes.

"or joe lieberman either? "

A wonderfull man with absolute integrity no doubt about it.

I brought him as my guest to my first state central meeting; the man's truely a class act.

No fire in his belly however.

He's as kind and calm as his Illustrious father.

He ran for Congress in 2002 against John Larson. He does have decent name recognition.

I say Rell wants to endorse Lieberman. It would help her in the election.

I've only made a handful of posts on here, usually in support of Joe Lieberman. The way things look now, I plan on voting for Lieberman either as a Democrat or a Connecticut for Liebercrat. However you'd like to put it. I've been a Democrat my entire life, but will not vote for Ned Lamont, though I expect him to win the primary.

However, if Schlesinger is replaced by John McKinney, who I believe is a sincere and principled man, I'll have a lot to think about.

If the Republicans endorse Lieberman, I'm voting for Mertens or Urban.

I just wanted to share my point of view as a lifelong partisan Democrat who can't remember a more exciting and messy Senate race. I love when politics is a circus.

From what I have read, this Diane Urban person is not really a Republican, in that she doesn't really hold any republican position.

Schlesinger wouldn't have won without any gambling issue. On the face of it, it isn't horrible. Personally, I think that what's really bad is that he lost $50,000, even if it was all his money. Shows a complete lack of self-control. The fake id thing seems more or less like a chance to avoid marketing or attention. And counting cards is of course not a crime any more than smart betting is.

Hopefully, he'll be replaced by someone who could get solid Republican support and maybe win a 3 way race. If Lieberman wins the primary, this is all pretty moot, no Republican is going to beat Lieberman in a 2 way race. The Republican won't get over 50%.

Nope - in fact given the chance I'll vote for him.

I am however in contact with reality and it appears from press reports that Jodi wants him gone.

One question that hasn't been answered - Did AS use the fake name at Mohegan also to avoid card counting? If so, then his claim that it was only for wampum card is BS. Also, why use a fake name to avoid people knowing an elected official was gambling? If a constituent saw him there, he would be busted. It's not like they list the gamblers currently playing on a scoreboard somewhere in the casino. It all may be legal, but it doesn't change the fact that he's a lousy candidate, and was from the beginning. He has no respect from the party or its membership.

Maybe Jodi could convince Lisa ro run for Senate.

To me loyalty isn't a big thing, it's the only thing.

IOW's My handshake means something.

After a few decades of behaving in that fashion people tend to both trust and take the person seriously.

My friends will tell you I am viciously loyal and both words are operative.

(Otherwise I'm just warm cuddly fun kinda guy.)
