Lieberman Hedging His Bets

Senator to Start Collecting Signatures

Sen. Joe Lieberman will start gathering signatures for a run as an "independent Democrat" should he lose to Ned Lamont in August, the Hartford Courant is reporting:
Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman is to announce today he will petition for a place on the November ballot as an "independent Democrat," giving him a chance to stay alive politically should he lose an Aug. 8 primary for the Democratic nomination.

Lieberman began making courtesy calls to leading Democrats late this morning. (Pazniokas)

Lieberman needs to collect 7,500 signatures by August 9th.

Doing this three days before the debate is like handing Ned Lamont a bat with a nail through it and saying, "Here. Club me with this."

It also suggests that Lieberman is really not all that interested in what Democratic primary voters have to say. What, exactly, is an "independent Democrat" anyway? A Democrat who isn't a Democrat?

No matter how he tries to spin it, this is not where Joe Lieberman wanted to be right now.

At every moment in Liebermans life where he could stand up and fight or CUT AND RUN Lieberman chose CUT AND RUN

Long Post Ahead...

Here's the press release I just got from the Lieberman campaign:

***PRESS RELEASE***

STRESSING HIS DEMOCRATIC LOYALTIES, JOE LIEBERMAN TAKES STEPS FOR BALLOT PLACEMENT IN GENERAL ELECTION
Campaign Remains Focused on Winning Democratic Primary

Hartford, CT – Sen. Joe Lieberman announced today that he has decided to take steps in order to ensure ballot placement in the General Election. The details of the effort, which consists of collecting 7,500 signatures, will be made public in the coming days. In his remarks, Lieberman assured Democratic voters that his campaign is squarely focused on winning the Democratic Primary on August 8.

During the short speech, on the steps of the State Capitol, Lieberman quoted the reasons for his decision:

“I have been a proud, loyal and progressive Democrat since John F. Kennedy inspired my generation of Americans into public service. And I will stay a Democrat, whether I am the Democratic Party’s nominee or a petitioning Democratic candidate on the November ballot.

And, If I am privileged enough to be re-elected in November, I will remain a member of the Democratic Caucus, hopefully a Senate Democratic Majority Caucus.

After 18 years of working for, fighting for, and delivering for all the people of Connecticut, I want the opportunity to make my case to all the voters in November --- they are the voters who have been good enough to elect me in the Senate in the November elections of 1988, 1994 and 2000.

Based on my experience, principles and accomplishments, I know that I can do more for the people of Connecticut than my opponents.”

Now, having made this decision, my supporters and I are going to focus with single-minded intensity on our goal of winning the Democratic Primary, and we look forward to August 9th. When all we have to do is celebrate our victory in the Primary the day before.”

TEXT OF SEN. LIEBERMAN’S REMARKS

I’ve had the honor of representing the people of Connecticut for a long time – as a Democratic member of the State Senate for 10 years, as a Democratic Majority Leader of the State Senate for six of those years, as Democratic Attorney General for six years, as your Democratic United States Senator for 18 years. And, I’ve always leveled with you.

That’s why I want to tell you today that I have made the decision to allow signatures to be collected that will enable me to appear on the November Ballot as an individual Democratic candidate for re-election to the Senate if I don’t win the Democratic Party’s nomination in the Primary on August 8th.

I want to be clear about why I have made this decision and what it means.

First, I have been a proud, loyal and progressive Democrat since John F.

Now, my reasons for making this decision:

While I believe that I will win the August 8th Primary, I know that there are no guarantees in elections. I am very confident that if every Democrat, or even a majority of them, vote on August 8th I will be nominated by a very comfortable margin.

But, no one knows how many Democrats will come out to vote on August 8th, and few think it will be more than 25 or 30 percent. And what if my opponent, who says he is worth somewhere between $90 and $300 million decides to write bigger and bigger checks in the last weeks of the campaign?

After 18 years of working for, fighting for, and delivering for all the people of Connecticut, I want the opportunity to make my case to all the voters in November --- they are the voters who have been good enough to elect me in the Senate in the November elections of 1988, 1994 and 2000.

My opponent in the Democratic Primary is asking Democrats to vote against me because of my position on one issue—Iraq. I am asking Democrats in the Primary in August and the General Election in November to consider my total record of service to our state and country over 18 years. Every election is about the future, about which of the candidates can do more for the voters, their families, and our state and country in the years ahead and that choice involves a lot more than one issue. I am asking voters in the Primary and the General Election to ask themselves which one of us can do more to save their jobs and create new ones, to protect their security, their freedom, and their environment, to bring energy costs and health care costs under control.

The six years ahead will be tough ones for a lot of people in Connecticut and they will need help from their Senator.

Based on my experience, principles and accomplishments, I know that I can do more for the people of Connecticut than my opponents.

But that ultimately won’t be up to me or the other candidates. It will be decided by the voters of Connecticut --- first the Democratic voters in the Primary on August 8th, and then by all the voters in the General Election on November 7th.

Now, having made this decision, my supporters and I are going to focus with single-minded intensity on our goal of winning the Democratic Primary, and we look forward to August 9th. When all we have to do is celebrate our victory in the Primary the day before.

Thank you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. Is Joe Lieberman getting out of the Democratic Primary?

A. No. Joe Lieberman is completely committed to winning the Democratic Primary. For the next five weeks, all of his and the campaign’s time and efforts will be focused on winning the August 8th Democratic Primary.

Q. Is Joe Lieberman leaving the Democratic Party?

A. No. He has been a registered Democrat his whole life and he will always be a registered Democrat. If he petitions his way onto the ballot in November, he would continue to be a registered Democrat. He would be the same public servant he always has been—with a strong progressive voting record

Q. Won’t he be running as an Independent?

A. No, he will not be on the ballot as an Independent.

Q. How will he appear on the ballot?

A. He has two options, to petition his way on as an individual, or as a petitioning party. That decision will be made in the coming days.

Q. Does this move signal to Sen. Lieberman's supporters that he thinks he is going to lose the primary?

A. No. The most recent polling has shown that Sen. Lieberman holds a commanding lead over his opponent. These steps are only being taken as a fallback

A. No.

Q. When will the campaign begin collecting signatures?

A. This decision was made over the last few days. There is not yet a set date or fixed plan for collecting signatures.

The smart move for Chris would to become the spokesman for all the Connecticut Dems that Joe will hurt via his selfishness.

Yup!

That would be perfect!

That way every dem who ever helped Murphy the anti-christ would have been stabbed in the back by him.

Right now Joe is alone in that regard.

Clearly you have failed to talk to any dems in Southington, Cheshire or Wolcott about the current holder of the 16th senate seat.

Well, I would imagine the State Republicans are getting ready to unveil their new Senate Candidate.

You don't see Nancy Johnson coming out STRONG for Alan Scheslinger?

I'll say it again. The Republicans will have another person to run in the next few weeks

Weicker Liker said...

Disguntled...

Have you seen Schlesinger's numbers??

He would finish in a distant third with 8% of the vote.

I just cant believe the CT Republicans would ALLOW this opportunist to remain on the ballot when they know in their hearts of hearts he CANT win.

I was at the President's Dinner two weeks ago in Washington. Nobody from the National Republican Senatorial Committee were touting their high hopes for Alan Schlesinger of Connecticut.

No mention about him from people like Senator Elizabeth Dole, who chairs the organization that would support Schlesinger.

He is not even on their radar!

And they listed about 10 Senatorial candidates they were excited about.

You can keep drinking this Schlesinger Kool-Aide, but unfortunately, he WONT win.

I've often wondered what sort of shallow ego-tripping empty suits would pay crazy money to go to that dog and pony show.

Thanks for illustrating the point so well.

Authentic....

I never said that I PAID to go to that event.

I worked the event as a volunteer for the National Republican Congressional Committee

Still, National people do not have Alan Schlesinger on their radar.

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure ya did.

I suppose your weasel MacLean was the big buzz down there too, right?

I'll bet they all simply adored his plan to increase the size of congress to over 8000.

ROF,L

It's pretty obvious what he's all about; diminishing GOP turnout in the 1st - period. MacLean's candidacy has nothing to do with running for congress and everything to do with weakening Jodi Rell.

For corrupt Republicans, Rell's a problem and must go so those that wish to enrich themselves at taxpayers expense (ie: the past few years prior to Jodi) can get back to "work" (using the term `work' loosely).

I doubt the veracity of your posts in general terms; however there's the outside chance you're either one of the 3 stooges or aligned with them.

Known to pass out in bars and wet your pants are ya?

Done a little time and get out on a tech?

Big McCain guy a few years ago?

Where has Miriam Masullo gone to?

In that case you're as much an anti-semite as George Rockwell and are unfit for discourse with upright people.

Period.

Weicker Liker said...

AR...

Why is anyone that disagrees with you an anti-semite?

Are you that much of a foolish old man??

When is Dr. Masullo going to say anything to the voters? She has been very quiet over the past 40 days.

Has she even raised any money? Have not seen an FEC Registration for this cycle.

Hardly.

However anyone the Simon Wiesenthal Center considers to be one probably is.

MacLean has yet to disavow his groups statements (meanwhile their affilate the PCUSA has issued a complete reversal) nor have you disavowed him.

Guilt by association?
You bet.
Next case Dr. Mengele.

I don't recall doing that but maybe I did.

You must have said something
leading me to believe you're not willing to defend & support Israel.

I think 5000+ years is enough - period.

That is the primary reason I support the current war on terror.

Saddam has be unable to bribe suicide bombers to the tune of 50K a pop for some time now for example.

Meanwhile some American groups are sending aid to the new Hamas gov't which amounts to nothing less than supporting terrorism.

They might as well endorse al qaeda while they're at it.

For the record I'm not Jewish. I am however touchy about the treatment of the Bosses relatives.
